This is gameplay for Socom 4: US Navy Seals for the PS3. As it always did, the PS3 hates my capture card, so forgive the bad quality of the footage.

I never had the chance to play this game online, but from the single player perspective, it saddens me to see one of my favorite PS2 series' come off as just another modern shooter. I haven't played all the way through this one yet, so I cannot comment on the overall quality of the game. I do like that it did allow me to either sneak around the enemy, or kill 'em all. You can see what route I went.

I guess that in the age of the "Modern" shooter, no one really wants deeper tactical shooters anymore. The original Socom wasn't the deepest tactical shooter franchise around, but I liked it's balance. It was faster-paced and more arcadey than games like Ghost Recon (the original series), and Rainbow Six (the original series), but not quite as arcadey or as fast paced as Counter Strike. It was somewhere in the middle. For better or for worse, you could call it a slower-paced version of CS in it's online play, but faster more cowboy (if you chose to play that way) than GR in it's single player and multiplayer.

I also really liked how the original series gave you side-objectives to complete that were optional. It also had an openess in you could take each stage and be completely stealthy, or just run and gun through each stage (my preferred way, LOL).

I am going to give Socom 4 a fair shot. So far it's not bad from what I've played. I have even enjoyed what little I've played, even if I still like the original series better. It is a shame that Zipper went under. I also rather liked M.A.G. as well.
