YouTube Partner Program's 2018 Monetization Changes Affect These 3 Types of Channels Most
YouTube announced that in February, they would be changing the minimum standards to enter their partner program. Channels now need to have 1000 subscribers and 4000 minutes of watch time in 12 months in order to be eligible for monetization. Honestly, this is not that high of a standard to meet, and if you can't meet them, you are probably only missing out in pennies. You do not get much money for that little watch time. The theory that this change kills small creators is mostly unfounded because small creators were never making much, usually not even enough to actually meet Google Adsense's $100 cash out limit.
However, there are certain styles of content that are more conducive to high views and fewer subscribers. Meme channels, music channels, and channels who benefit from getting lucky with a single viral video might be the most negatively affected by these changes.
