What are Saturated and Unsaturated Hydrocarbons?
The main difference between saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons lies in the nature of their carbon-carbon bonds:
Saturated hydrocarbons: These compounds have single bonds between carbon atoms. This means that each carbon atom is bonded to other carbon atoms by a single covalent bond. Due to this structure, saturated hydrocarbons are more stable and less reactive than unsaturated hydrocarbons. They have higher melting and boiling points and are usually liquids or solids at room temperature.
Unsaturated hydrocarbons: In contrast, unsaturated hydrocarbons have at least one double (alkenes) or triple (alkynes) bond between carbon atoms. These double or triple bonds involve the presence of pi (π) electrons, which are more susceptible to chemical reactions. Therefore, unsaturated hydrocarbons are more reactive than saturated hydrocarbons. They have lower melting and boiling points and are usually gases, liquids, or soft solids at room temperature.
Another important difference is that saturated hydrocarbons have the general formula CnH2n+2, while unsaturated hydrocarbons have formulas such as CnH2n (alkenes) or CnH2n-2 (alkynes). This difference in formula reflects the different number of hydrogen atoms present in each type of hydrocarbon, due to the presence of double or triple bonds in unsaturated hydrocarbons.
