An educational video where I make a device from a sheet of plywood and roller skate wheels that helps hold a long rotating workpiece on a lathe.
I made the steady rest not monolithic, as is widely used, but composite. This allows you to install it without removing the tailstock. Which in turn ensures better preservation of the coaxiality of the workpiece and the axis of rotation of the lathe spindle.
That is, the steady rest consists of two absolutely identical parts.
I glued the parts from 8 mm sanded plywood. And it turned out that the width of the bearing bushing at the wheel was 24 mm, that is, the bracket post, glued from three layers of plywood, fits the wheel perfectly.
I made the sketch with the dimensions myself - there are no more detailed drawings. The sketch is shown in the video at 14:48.
The steady rest sits very tightly on the frame. I then sharpened a vase from a demonstration birch log (there is a photo of it at the end of the video) – and several times I awkwardly hit the neck with the cutter. And if it weren’t for the steady rest, the vase would have definitely flown away. And the neck wouldn’t have turned out so even
In general, I was pleased with the experiment – ​​it turned out to be a good and useful device for a lathe.
