TOEFL Reading Comprehension Practice (Main Idea Question)
In the TOEFL ITP (Institutional Testing Program) Reading Comprehension section, the main idea refers to the central point or the most important message that the author wants to convey in a passage. Identifying the main idea is a common question type, and it tests your ability to understand the overall purpose of the text.
Here’s how to approach them:
1) Identify the Passage’s Purpose: Before answering, skim the passage (in Reading) or listen carefully (in Listening) to grasp the general point. Think about the central message or objective the author or speaker is communicating.
2) Look for Key Sentences: In reading passages, the main idea is often found in the introduction or conclusion, where the author summarizes their main point. In lectures or conversations, listen for introductory phrases or summary remarks that encapsulate the core message.
3) Eliminate Details: Main Idea Questions focus on the broad picture, not specifics. Avoid answer choices that focus solely on a particular detail or example.
4) Use Process of Elimination: Cross out options that are too narrow, too broad, or unrelated to the central point.
Question Stems: Main Idea Questions might look like:
“What is the main idea of the passage?”
“What is the purpose of the lecture?”
“What is the primary topic of the conversation?”
