The Highest-Scoring Scrabble Word I've Ever Seen
Welcome to Episode 33 of Scrabble History, a series where I break down some of the most incredible plays, epic rivalries, and amazing moments in Scrabble's rich competitive history.
The geometry of the Scrabble board allows for absolutely eye-popping scores, but in practice, nothing like OXYPHENBUTAZONE hitting three Triple Word Scores will ever be played in a tournament game when both players are focused on winning. Plays hitting two triples are already uncommon enough. In this video, I'll break down a game from 2017 between Piotr Andronowski and Robert Richland that has the highest scoring word I've ever actually seen played in a sanctioned tournament game of Scrabble.
NOTE: As I discuss in the video, there are recorded instances of higher-scoring words, but there's either no evidence of the actual game or play (like Karl Khoshnaw's CAZIQUES for 392), or, as with Michael Cresta's QUIXOTRY, they took place in a club game, which is much less formal. This channel mostly focuses on tournament Scrabble, so that's what I mean when I say "highest I've ever seen."
