The figure who inspired this film was Anneliese Michel. She was a German teenager who reportedly faced death after being possessed by a demon.
Born on September 21, 1952, in Bavaria, Germany, Anneliese grew up in a devoutly religious family. She was also known as a kind person. The story begins in 1968, when Anneliese Michel, at the age of 16, fainted and lost consciousness. Fearing something might happen, Michel's parents took her to the doctor for an examination. However, the examination determined that Anneliese was in good condition.
The following year, Anneliese Michel fainted again, but this time with convulsions. And at that moment, she seemed to lose control of her own body. This time, Anneliese was taken by her parents to a neurologist, and the results of the examination revealed that Anneliese was suffering from epilepsy and some kind of mental disorder.
