Middle Class Man

Remembering Doug Mulray with another one from the vault. February 1988 – a parody of Jimmy Barnes’ solo hit from a couple of years earlier, the Springsteen-lite “Working Class Man.” It was the 1980s, the rise of the Yuppie, so it seemed kind of obvious. I just did the words, but Doug and the gang did the rest. Doug’s voice is phenomenal. As Lizzie (his widow) said at his send-off, in another life he could have been an opera singer. And the band is tremendous too. Not sure exactly who played on this, but I know that Chris Harriot and Terry Murray did a lot of the music parodies back then, so it was probably them. Here’s the lyrics:

Don’t need to make a living
An inheritance he’ll get
Daddy’s boy went to private school
Blue pinstripe in his veins
Oh-oh-oh-oh he’s a middle class man

Well he’s a north shore disciple
Belongs to the New Right
Jogging like a lunatic
‘cause his track pants are too tight
Oh-oh-oh-oh he’s a middle class man

He believes in gold and Volvo
Life member of the SCG
Did his time at the Stock Exchange
Still mad at BHP
He’s a wealthy man with a Rolex watch
In a gold credit card land
Oh-oh-oh-oh he’s a middle class man

Well he loves a little woman
But please don’t tell his wife
If she found out, she’d fillet him
With a Wiltshire Stay-Sharp knife

He ain’t worried about the tomorrow
He’s invested in the Yen
If there’s another crash, he’ll have the cash
To reinvest again
Oh-oh-oh-oh he’s a middle class man
