This song is about the sad experience of an Irishman who left Ireland and returned after many years abroad. As the singer learns that the Irish language is on her death bed, he promises to save the language himself, and with it the country and culture, by “múinamíd Gaeilge do Ghráinne” (transl.: teaching Irish to the Irish).

Last summer during an Irish language course in Gaeltacht na nDéise, the class teacher taught everyone in my class the pronunciation in his native accent, which is the regional dialect. I tried to mimic his pronunciation closely, but I am not sure if I completely hit the mark.

As is often the way with Irish songs, I have no idea who is said to have written Gráinne.
