Shared System 'X' | Episode 01 | And now it's up to us.
When I got the news that the Shared System went into retirement, I felt a bit bad about my 40+ episode series and I had to finish it with a final 'goodbye' episode. But now it's time to boot a new series in the expanded MakeNoise Universe, where final runs are in Black & Gold and new modules go stereo.
In the MakeNoise 'Tony talks Shared System' videos, Tony stated it's now up to us to make our own custom systems. This is a great opportunity and a bit of a challenge considering there are more modules than a 7U case can serve.
In this first episode, I'll go through the history of MakeNoise systems and do a quick tour with my current Shared System 'X' which is built around the Spectraphon and the Tape & Microsound Music Machine. It's not a proposed or best layout, but I've spent a lot of time shifting modules around and it feels like a system. A system has everything you need and is organized in a logical order so you don't have to patch all over the place.
Even if you don't care about MakeNoise at all, this new series will provide some insights to help you plan your own case. A system isn't an arbitrary set of modules. That's a patch blanket. Systems make all the difference between wasting a lot of money and having a great time.
I still need to plan EP02, but it's about recreating a DPO assuming it will never return. EP03 is finished, and will be posted soon. It's about the Erbe-Verb which is doing its final run in Black & Gold. Is it still valid in 2024? I'll try not to say 'yes' or 'no', but give you enough ideas to decide for yourself. So it's not just about full 7U case layouts, there will be episodes revisiting individual modules you should know about when you're new to Eurorack. You'd better subscribe too.
