Artist Feature: Daniel Giordano
Whether deep-frying motorbikes, flaying tennis balls, or filling bison bladders with ground-up urinal cakes, sculptor Daniel Giordano takes an alchemical approach to assemblage, transforming the flotsam of Newburgh, NY – his Hudson Valley hometown – into provocatively personal portraits of a family and culture in transition.
Dozens of Giordano’s eclectic, autobiographical works – crafted from face masks, ticks, sewing machines, Nesquik powder, and other materials accumulated in and around his family’s former factory – go on view Feb. 4 at MASS MoCA in Daniel Giordano: Love From Vicki Island, the artist’s first solo museum exhibition.
