This video is an excerpt from a longer show which originally aired on August 11, 2021, as a part of the SPAH virtual conference (Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica).
The Lifers are:
Andy Fordyce - Drums
Chuck Gabriel - Bass
Mike Giordano - Guitar
Miguel Landestoy - Keyboards
John Shirley - Vocals and Harmonica
As with all of the other tunes in this set, for this cover of Lil' Devil by The Cult I am using the acoustic diatonic harmonica. The particular tones I get here, however, all come from footpedals… relying heavily on pitch-shifting, EQ, and distortion effects. The pitch shifting intervals are controlled by the new miniMIDI JOYstick, the brainchild of Brendan Power and myself, which is available on Brendan’s website:

I also use the Dyna-Mic here as it is a great platform to mount the MMJ on and from which to launch my crazy effects.

All videography, video editing, music recording, music mixing, arranging, staging and lighting were done by John Shirley.
Special thanks to Deb Huber, Mike Testa, Charles Mirabile, Alan Williams and Ted Simpson, as well as the SPAH board and membership who have been so supportive.
