In late 2023, some PADI dive centers across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa received crucial updates regarding changes in PADI’s approach to multi-agency dive centers. They have made their position fairly clear in that they would like dive centers offering PADI training to ONLY offer PADI training. As a Chartered Accountant and former business advisor, our very own Gary has also weighed in on this policy shift. With a keen analytical eye, he's examined how it’s unfolding in these regions. Surprisingly, Gary concludes that this strategic step aligns perfectly with PADI’s transition into the third stage of their business improvement process and is exactly what he would have advised them to do if he was still in his 'old world'.
While this move may not sit well with those heavily invested in the PADI Brand and its training programs, it’s a rationalization strategy straight out of the business 101 textbooks. By streamlining operations, PADI aims to become a leaner, more efficient organization.
However, implementing this policy globally poses challenges. In markets like the US, Canada, and much of Europe, PADI still holds a dominant position in diver training. Yet, such exclusivity could potentially invite legal scrutiny for restrictive market practices.
But here’s the twist: As PADI seeks to reduce affiliated dive centers (starting with multi-branded ones), what fate awaits independent instructors who work across multiple brands? Will they be offered the opportunity to offer only PADI training? or will they have their PADI memberships terminated under 'Article 17' of the membership agreement?
