Carmen: A Hip Hopera is a 2001 musical film starring Beyoncé Knowles as the titular character, a seductive and ambitious aspiring singer who gets involved with a troubled cop and a famous rap producer. The film is loosely based on the 1875 opera Carmen by Georges Bizet, but updates the setting to modern-day Los Angeles and incorporates elements of hip hop music and culture. The film explores themes of love, betrayal, fame and destiny.
