Exporting course materials from PowerSchool Schoology LMS and importing into Instructure Canvas LMS. To be honest, I have been hesitant to make this video. There are arguments to be made for rebuilding a course from a clean sheet in Canvas.
Canvas has many more capabilities than Schoology, importing material may channel an instructor into a suboptimal solution in Canvas.
There could also be extensive clean-up work to be done in Canvas. If that clean-up work misses some material, the course could have unexpected gaps, potholes in the curriculum. For example, pages in Schoology do not import as pages in Canvas. Pages in Schoology import as static HTML files in the files area of Canvas. This material has to be manually copied into Pages in Canvas.
Another caveat to using this process is that only 500 Mb of material can be transferred. If Schoology were to produce an export file in excess of 500 Mb, then the material would exceed the 500 Mb storage limit for a Canvas course.
Some quiz question types may not transfer as the same quiz question type. This will likely be especially true if one is using the Assessments material item rather than the test/quizzes material item for assessments in Schoology. This could mean extensive rebuilding of tests and quizzes.
There are other areas that exist in Canvas that Schoology does not have, such as the Syllabus.
With those warnings, this video covers how to export a course from Schoology and import that course file into Canvas. The course file should be imported into an empty course: the import process can and will overwrite existing material. I would recommend moving the material into the actual destination course rather than the sandbox. In the video the import is done into the sandbox because the author has a course already set up in Canvas.
