This hands-on lab is for database administrators and developers who want to learn how to run Oracle databases in Docker containers. The workshop begins with an introduction to containers, their concepts and terminology, how they differ from virtual machines, and the advantages and practical applications for running Oracle databases in containers. Next, participants go hands-on, building and running an Oracle database in Docker using an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure Always-Free Tier account. Students will learn how to customize host and database environments and allow connections from SQL Developer and other clients. The workshop concludes with a look at more advanced applications, including performance modeling, testing, upgrades, and Data Guard.

Prior experience with Docker is not necessary. The lab is fully documented and participants may follow along at their own pace during the session. The lab guide includes extra exercises that build on the live session material to illustrate additional concepts and techniques. The lab guide, which includes instructions for setting up an Always-Free Tier OCI account, will be provided to attendees prior to the session.

This lab is a wonderful opportunity to familiarize yourself with the benefits of running Oracle in containers, and ways to start using these technologies now—for testing, development, education, experimentation, automation, and more!
