After graduating from Top Gun more than 30 years ago, United States Navy Captain Pete "Maverick" Mitchell is a test pilot. Despite Maverick's tremendous accomplishments, his continuous disobedience has prevented him from achieving flag rank. Admiral Tom "Iceman" Kazansky, his buddy and former Top Gun opponent, is the commander of the U.S. Pacific Fleet who frequently shields Maverick from being grounded. In lieu of financing drones, Rear Admiral Chester "Hammer" Cain intends to terminate Maverick's "Darkstar" scramjet program. To prevent termination of the program, Maverick modifies the flight plan for the forthcoming test from Mach 9 to Mach 10 to match the program's contract requirements. The prototype is nevertheless destroyed as Maverick exceeds Mach 10. Iceman once more saves Maverick's career by assigning him to NAS North Island, but Hammer tells him that the age of crewed fighter planes is coming to an end.
