**Correction: SHA1 produces 160-bit hashes. MD5 produces 128-bit hashes. MD5 characters are hexadecimal (4 bits (also known as Nibble)) and therefore we have 32 hexadecimal characters (those ranging from 0-9 and A-F). 4 bits per character x 32 characters = 128 bits for each MD5 hash.
