ECU's Miller School of Entrepreneurship | USASBE 2021 Model Emerging Program Recipient
The Miller School of Entrepreneurship, made possible by a generous commitment of $5 million by Fielding and Kim Miller, is the only endowed school of entrepreneurship in North Carolina, and among only a handful in the country. The core purpose of the School is to instill an entrepreneurial mindset and skill set in our students, and demonstrate the viability of
entrepreneurship as a key element of regional economic development. The values of the Miller School (Visionary Change, Engaged Learning, Partnerships, Thought Leadership and Service) are aligned with the mission of East Carolina University, which is to be a national model for student success, public service and regional transformation. Through the adherence to its values and commitment to the institution’s mission, the Miller School of Entrepreneurship is creating a national model for how to incorporate entrepreneurship into regional economic development efforts, particularly in a rural region. Located in eastern North Carolina, there is an opportunity to create resilient communities which foster entrepreneurship and small
business vitality. Partnerships between the Miller School, other offices at ECU, economic development agencies, municipal leaders, chambers of commerce and foundations provide a strong basis to change the narrative for rural communities and transform the mindset from traditional economic development to a local based “grow your own” approach to community
building.
