“Young men talk about everything: sex, drugs, parties and politics, so why is there a silence when it comes to mental health?” asks filmmaker Mollie Mills, who says her recent film Men Don’t Cry is hardest thing she’s ever shot.
It isn’t everyday you see a campaign in favour of giving men a bigger platform to be heard. Even rarer to see someone highlighting the the pitfalls of hypermasculinity because of the negative impact on males themselves. But, with suicide being the biggest killer of young men under 45 in the UK, the raw and personal film highlights the problems with expecting males to ‘man up’ rather than talking about their issues.
