Nirbhay Subsonic Cruise Missile

The long range sub-sonic cruise missiles are going to be an important component of India’s upcoming Rocket Force. The Subsonic Cruise Missile development is very challenging. It’s not as simple as launching a missile from point A to Point B. It involves technologies such as redundancies which guarantees its survival & potency in any condition and long-range way point navigation over 1000 km.

Nirbhay is India’s first subsonic cruise missile which is indigenously developed and can be launched from multiple platforms. It can fly at low altitudes and carry conventional & strategic warheads to attack fixed or mobile land targets. Technologies like thrust vector control to turn the missile into and onto the target plane, in-flight wing deployment and inflight engine start has been proved. In cruise phase, technologies like low altitude flight (100 meters to 20 meters) and very low altitude (20 meters to 5 meters) flight over sea using radar altimeter in the loop and long-range way point navigation to cover more than 1000 km using inertial navigation system and position update have been proved.

The missile has a overall length of 7.6m, diameter of 520mm and all up weight of 1450kg. Nirbhay has a range of 1000 km, endurance of 30 mins, speed of 0.7 mach and cruise altitude of 100m. It uses INS/GPS for navigation an RF/EO/IR seeker for terminal homing. It’s a vertical launch missile with thrust vector control booster. It is powered by Russian NPO Saturn 36MT engine. Nirbhay missile program has been successful. It has completed 8 successful flight trials.

Indigenous Technology Cruise Missile (ITCM)

DRDO has launched ITCM-TD program for the 100% indigenisation of long-range subsonic cruise missile. The most important component of the missile is going to be indigenously developed STFE Manik engine. Manik is an expendable STFE (Small Turbofan Engine) with 450 kgf thrust for powering subsonic drones. To begin with, the engine will power the ITCM. The STFE engine success will clear path for Long-Range Land Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM) for land, sea & air domains.

The latest of ITCM conducted on 21st February 2023, with small turbo fan engine (STFE) Manik & upgraded radio frequency seeker was a success. Recently a new NOTAM has been issued from 1st of July to 2nd of July 2023 from Abdul Kalam Island. The NOTAM has a range of 700km which indicates the possible test of ITCM. The other possibility could be for SMART (Supersonic Missile Assisted Release of Torpedo). However, the possibility of ITCM test is higher as its very close to its project completion date. The projected completion date for ITCM is July 2023 which is just few months away. DRDO will be conducting couple of more tests to validate the ITCM missile at longer range.
