Located thirty miles outside Old Lhasa, Ganden Monastery was the premiere scholastic institution in Tibet after the rise of Ganden Probang government in Lhasa. It had been founded by the great monk Tsongkhapa in 1409 and was the center of the Gelukpa lineage. Destroyed in 1959, Ganden Monastery has been rebuilt brick by brick by the faithful though regrettably under the watchful and unsympathetic eye of the authorities. A circumambulation of its lingkhor and its commanding views over the Lhasa River Valley adds to the impressive impact of a visit to the site.
