NATO's Dependence on US Military Might
With everything happening right now — Russia, Ukraine, Greenland, and renewed pressure from Donald Trump — one question keeps coming up:
Does NATO need the United States more than the U.S. needs NATO?
At first glance, the numbers seem overwhelming. The U.S. covers 65–70% of NATO’s defense spending, provides the nuclear umbrella for Europe, supplies most of the intelligence, airlift, and missile defense, and would contribute hundreds of thousands of troops in a major conflict. By raw military power, America carries NATO.
But that’s not the whole story.
