A Japanese person landed alone on Takeshima/Dokdo from the Korean side. I saw with my own eyes the “territorial dispute site” that you can’t understand just from the news or maps.

This time, I departed from Seomyeon, Busan, and headed to the island called “Dokdo” in Korea and “Takeshima” in Japan, passing through Nampo, Pohang, and Ulleungdo.

Before going, honestly, I thought Takeshima/Dokdo was an uninhabited island with only rocks where no one lives.
But when I actually went, there were many tourists landing by boat, Korea’s Dokdo police guard, safety management personnel, lighthouses and management facilities, address signs, and the reality that people are permanently stationed there.

Before boarding, while Korean passengers passed through smoothly, only I, a Japanese person, was stopped by the police for passport verification and a brief questioning.
“Where are you from?” “What is your purpose for going to Dokdo?” “Do you have a Rising Sun Flag?”
Although there were tense moments, the police officer’s response was not intimidating but friendly.

What left a strong impression on me during this trip was the kindness of the people I met in Korea.
In Pohang, a young man who I only asked for directions came with me to the ferry terminal and helped me find a hotel after the ferry was canceled.
In Ulleungdo, a man I spoke to by chance reserved the boat to Dokdo using his own phone number for me.
I was really helped by a taxi driver, hotel owners, and people at restaurants.

The Takeshima I had heard of in Japan and Dokdo from the Korean side—
between them, there is a completely different reality.

I came not to wave one country’s flag, but as a border enthusiast, to see what this place is actually like.
There are things on site that you can’t understand from just news or the internet.
This trip to Takeshima/Dokdo strongly made me feel that.
