Section - 20: Mastering IP Services:
Welcome back to a new video in our Free CCNA Course Series and in this video, we will discuss the concept of NAT. Let’s get started -
The Concept of NAT
NAT stands for Network Address Translation and you are going to learn about Static NAT and PAT.
Suppose you have a Server in your domain and you want to provide its access to the outside world, then you can use the concept of Static NAT.
PAT is used when you want to give access to the internet to the users present in your network.
If you want to access a server using the public IP, you have to define your NAT configuration into steps.
Step 1: Define inside and outside interfaces of NAT
Step 2: Configure NAT.
All the interfaces that are pointing to your Enterprise Network will be IP NAT inside and the interfaces that are pointing to the Internet act as IP NAT outside.
If the traffic is initiated from the outside, the destination will be translated.
The Concept of PAT
In the case of configuring PAT, if you want all the traffic that is initiated from your Enterprise should go to the Internet but the source IP address of every packet will be translated to your public address, for that you will have to define configuration in the same manner.
Step 1: Define inside and outside interfaces of NAT.
Step 2: Configure a new NAT for PAT as you are translating multiple IPs to a single IP.
While configuring it, make sure to use the keyword ‘Overload’ otherwise the device will think it is dynamic NAT and not assume it as PAT.
So, in this video, we have discussed the concept of static NAT and PAT.
