Years ago subaru switch the oil drain plug design from the 17 MM design to a 14 MM design.

Subaru changed more then the bolt head. The drain plug is also made of a lighter metal.

The design change was to save shipping weight, packaging size, and reduce metal costs.

This new style drain plug has been nothing but a pain in the butt. From 1999 to 2011 I never saw a stopped drain plug or over torqued plug. Since the beginning of the 14 mm plug, every 300 Subarus comes in the shop with a stuck drain plug.

Now there is a new plug design, that is sold separately.
The factories are still using the 14mm plug, even on 2023, so be on the look out.
