This tutorial will show you how to make selections with Photoshop CC using:
LASSO Tool
POLYGONAL LASSO Tool
MAGNETIC LASSO Tool
Select and Mask
📌 Select with the Lasso Tool
▪️ In the Tools panel, select the Lasso Tool. This tool is useful for cleaning up a selection you've started with another tool.
▪️ To expand a selection made with any other tool, press the Shift key and drag the cursor around the area you want to add.
▪️ To narrow a selection, click the Subtract from Selection option in the Options bar, or press the Alt key (Windows) or Option key (macOS) and drag the cursor around the area you want to remove.
▪️ Press Ctrl+D (Windows) or Command+D (macOS) to deselect.
📌 Select with the Polygonal Lasso Tool
The Polygonal Lasso Tool is useful for drawing straight segments of a selection border.
▪️ Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool
▪️ To set the starting point, click on the image.
▪️ Do one or more of the following:
To draw a straight segment, position the mouse pointer where you want the first straight segment to end and click. Continue clicking to set the endpoints of subsequent segments.
To draw straight lines constraining segments to 45° increments, hold down Shift while moving the mouse pointer to click the next segment.
To draw a freehand segment, hold down Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac OS) and drag. When you're finished, release the Alt or Option key and the mouse button.
To delete the last straight segments drawn, press Delete.
▪️ Close the selection border:
Position the Polygonal Lasso tool pointer at the starting point (a closed circle appears next to the pointer) and click.
If the pointer is not at the starting point, double-click the Polygonal Lasso tool pointer or press Ctrl (Windows) or Command (Mac OS) and click.
📌 Select with the Magnetic Lasso tool
With the Magnetic Lasso tool, the edge aligns with the edges of well-defined areas of the image.
Set one or more of the following options:
WIDTH: To define the detection width, specify a value in pixels for Width. The Magnetic Lasso tool detects edges only within the specified distance from the pointer.
CONTRAST: To specify the lasso's sensitivity to image edges, set the Contrast option to a value between 1% and 100%. A higher value detects only edges that contrast sharply with their surroundings; a lower value detects edges with less contrast.
FREQUENCY: To specify the speed at which the lasso sets the anchor points, set Frequency to a value between 0 and 100.
A higher value anchors the selection edge in place more quickly.
📌 Refine a selection
▪️ Make a selection with a selection tool, such as the Quick Selection tool.
▪️ In the Options bar, click Select and Mask to open the Select and Mask workspace.
▪️ Go to the View menu on the right side of the workspace and choose one of the available view options, such as Overlay, to get a more precise view of your selection. In Overlay view, by default the selected area is sharp and the unselected area is translucent red.
▪️ In the Tools panel, select the Brush tool. Draw on the image where you want to add the selected area. If you want to subtract from the selected area, press the Alt key (Windows) or the Option key (macOS) and draw over the area you want to remove.
▪️ Scroll to the bottom right of the workspace, go to the Output Settings menu, select Output to, and choose Selection as the output type.
▪️ Click OK to close the Select and Mask workspace.
