Road Runner Sports invited me to try out their 3D foot scanning system to get measured for shoes and custom insoles. I warned them ahead of time that I've always been very skeptical of these types of processes as they usually end up recommending a stability shoe for me. But in my personal experience, stability shoes only end up creating injuries, rather than preventing them.
Road Runner Sports was surprisingly encouraged by this and wanted me to come down and visit even more. They assured me that they could find a shoe that I would like. And so I went for a visit where I ran on a treadmill barefoot, they videotaped it, they took a 3D scan of my foot, and I answered a couple of questions about my running and injury history.
At that point, it spit out some recommendations for shoes and made some recommendations as far as a custom insole. I tried both the insole and the shoes.
I thought the shoe recommendations were spot on: Pureboost Go, Launch 6, Kinvara 10, and Adizero Adios 4. These are shoes that I would recommend to myself (except for the Kinvara 10, but I think unless you really knew my feet, there's no way you'd know that I wouldn't like that one). But the custom insole made the shoes hard to really get a feel for.
So I took the insoles home and tried them out in a variety of shoes that I do have experience in. And ultimately, while I do have one arch that is high and the other that is normal, I don't think I have any symptoms that a custom insole can solve. Just like you wouldn't give medications to someone who isn't sick, I was only feeling the side effects without getting any benefits that would make those side effects worth bearing. But while the insoles weren't for me, I think that if you have been diagnosed with an issue by a sports medicine professional or if just haven't been able to find a great fit across even a variety of shoes, this is something you should consider.
