David Dunn (Bruce Willis, La jungla de cristal) es un guardia de seguridad sin motivaciones en la vida, con un empleo precario y a punto de separarse de su mujer , con la que tiene un niño pequeño. Un día, mientras viaja en tren, David sufre un aparatoso accidente, siendo él el único superviviente. Varios días después, y algo conmocionado por el accidente, David descubre una misteriosa tarjeta en su coche con una dirección. Junto a su hijo, marcha al lugar, que resulta ser una galería de cómics que dirige Elijah Price . tiene una enfermedad degenerativa que le impide moverse por el riesgo a fracturarse. Él piensa que si en el mundo hay una persona tremendamente frágil, en pos del equilibrio, debe haber gente contraria a él, inmune, alguien como David.
A pesar de las diferencias entre ellos, David acaba trabando amistad con Elijah, confiándole su mayor secreto: cree poseer una cualidad mágica que le hace diferente al resto. Tras una serie de trágicos acontecimientos, David decide reunirse con Elijah y acabar con todo, no quiere volver a saber nada ni de él ni de la supuesta "habilidad sobrenatural". Sin embargo, no será tan fácil obviar su condición... sobre todo cuando todo se vuelva en su contra.
