Is a Deere 650 an Engine Hoist? I THINK NOT!
Had a viewer question about whether or not a Deere 650 would pick a 500 lb. engine out of a car with a boom pole. I don't think so...
It's hard to answer the question because we don't really know the lift capacity of a Deere 650. Tractordata.com does not show a three point lift rating for the 650, Deere must not have been too proud of it. The Deere 670 replaced the 650, and it has a 3 point lift capacity of 790 lbs. Could they be the same?
The two tractors have similarly-sized engines. The 650 has a 52.1 cubic inch engine with 17 horsepower, the 670 has a 53.6 cube engine putting out 19.3 hp. That's where the similarity ends.
The 650 is a two cylinder, the 670 is a three popper, the 670 has a hydraulic pump that puts out more pressure and the 670 outweighs the 650 by at least 200 lbs. So, there's a good chance the 650 doesn't have near the 3 point lift capacity of it's successor. There are other factors to consider, though.
Ballast will make a big difference in lift capacity. That could be front wheel assist, a front end loader, or front weights. The mechanical condition of the tractor can come into play. A worn engine or hydraulic pump might mean the tractor won't pick up as much as when new. The length of the boom pole will be important, because every inch further away from the tractor the weight is lifted means less lift capacity. Finally, it's going to be hard to lift the maximum weight without having the tractor at PTO rated engine speed. That's going to make it difficult for the person in the tractor seat to feather the engine out of the car and any jerks may cause an unsafe situation for those helping, or damage parts or the car.
I don't recommend using a tractor that small to do a task like that, I'm not sure I recommend using a tractor to pull an engine at all. Rental yards have cherry pickers with hydraulic jacks that are a much safer way of removing and installing engines. Whatever they cost would be less than potential damage to people or components on the car if an accident occurred using a tractor.
