The Hebrew word menorah means “lampstand,” translated as “candlestick” in the King James Bible. The original menorah, made for the Tabernacle, was solid gold with seven oil lamps, a central stem, and three branches on each side (Exodus 25:31–37; 37:17–24). It burned pure olive oil (Exodus 27:20) and featured an almond motif.
The menorah symbolizes:
1. Purity: It used pure olive oil, symbolizing the Holy Spirit’s influence and the need for purity to enter God’s kingdom.
2. Light: Represented Jesus Christ as the light of the world (John 8:12), it signified following Him and receiving the Holy Ghost's guidance.
3. Covenants: It illuminated the Tabernacle, the place to make covenants. It was also meant to represent the light that covenant-makers should share with others.
4. Wholeness and Divine Presence: Through repentance and covenant-keeping, the menorah represented the power of Christ’s Atonement to make people whole when entering God’s presence.
