I grew up on the second floor of an ordinary Tashkent four-story building. Our apartment was distinguished from any Russian apartment only by a long loggia, part of the glazing of which was entwined with grapes, and in the other part naughty fig burdocks were constantly climbing through the windows. This fig, planted by our neighbor Uncle Volodya, grew like a weed right under the window. At the end of the summer, it was hung with fruits, but they were so sweet that we never picked or eaten them. Indeed, at the same time from the bazaar, dad brought the juiciest Mirzachul melons, watermelons, peaches, and the grapes were beginning to ripen. So I didn't care about figs, except that we got angry when with its huge leaves it prevented the ropes with linen from moving along the rollers on the brackets, as usual, attached to the outside of the loggia. Today I even feel a little sorry for this tree, bypassed by our attention.
Once we left that apartment and Tashkent.
For 30 years I have not remembered that disobedient fig bush, persistently knocking on our windows, but never achieved recognition. In Russia, this plant was not near.
All this came to my mind, arose from the depths of my childhood in Montenegro, where I again saw the once familiar branches, how I felt the rough, even prickly back side of the leaf, irritating the skin when I reached for large elastic fruits. Milky juice protruding from an unripe plucked fruit. Fig, not fig, here in the country of mountains this tree is called. She has a different taste, sweet and sour, more juicy. Much tastier than then, for a long time, Uzbek figs seemed to me. Or maybe because it tastes better because, together with the healthy pulp, the fig gives me memories of those carefree days when it was possible to get upset only because of the thorny leaves that prevent you from hanging the laundry washed by your mother outside the window?
