In Windows, there is a component called ReadyBoost. It allows using a flash memory drive as a cache. It uses a component called SuperFetch that keeps track of users' time-based computing habits. Based on that, it determines frequently used apps and saves them to the cache. SuperFetch saves cache on the hard drive. This cache can be fetched and pre-loaded in RAM way ahead of time. This can improve the system's performance. Note that auto defragmentation also uses this SuperFetch component in order to save the frequently used apps on the outer edge of the hard drive because it's the fastest part of the hard drive.
In ReadyBoost, instead of saving the cache on the hard drive, the cache is stored in a flash memory drive. Since flash memory has much faster seek time than Hard drive, maintaining cache is much faster.
