I've been curious about the international Southwest experience since they started offering flights to CUN out of STL a few years ago. During our Spring vacation this year, I had a perfect opportunity to check it out. Come along as I explore the new Terminal 4 at CUN, do a little spotting, and ride back to the states on a 737-700. The scenery after takeoff is probably the highlight of the whole trip... absolutely gorgeous.

As far as Southwest's operation in Mexico, the CUN station definitely left a lot to be desired. On my trip in it took almost an hour to get my luggage. There were no updates and no staff in sight at baggage claim to help out. On the return I was pleasantly surprised to see that they offered the self-tagging check in kiosks, but the bag drop line was quite long and moved very slowly. The boarding process is a joke. They have security doing random bag searches after boarding begins, so if you get pulled to the side, you lose your place in line. The people who paid for business select were first through and got pulled aside. As best as I could tell, they ended up boarding with the B group. Between these issues and the general unfriendliness of everyone I encountered... I was really disappointed in an airline that I admire very much. Luckily the onboard experience and flight crews held up to the usual Southwest standard during both flights.
