Variable winds demonstration on a hot afternoon. Sunny hot summer days when the wind is reported as light and variable is when landing smoothly is most challenging. Wind direction and speed can suddenly change due to the effect of the sun heating the earth's surface. Headwinds can suddenly change to tailwinds and crosswinds from one side to the other. This can be seen in the video by noticing which way the nose of the airplane needs to point to keep from drifting off of the centerline.
