Crafting Ancient Bronze Mirrors

Look, do you know what this is? This is malachite, a striking green ore treasured in ancient civilizations for its copper content. To extract copper, we first crush the malachite into a fine powder. Crushing it increases the surface area, making extraction easier.

Next, we spread the malachite powder over burning charcoal. Heating it with carbon removes oxygen, leaving us with pure copper. The temperature must be maintained at 1085°C for two hours.

Now, we have copper! After washing it, we melt it again, this time adding tin. Mixing 88% copper with 12% tin forms bronze. During this process, both metals are heated together in a furnace to a temperature between 950°C and 1,000°C. This takes about an hour or two.

Finally, the molten bronze is poured into a mold and allowed to cool. Once it has cooled, we give it a little polish, and we have a bronze mirror! What a beautiful, ancient gift! Such a tedious yet rewarding process!
