Thank you for tuning in the 5th instalment in the beginner driving lesson series. This topic is all about emerging.

Emerging is a process of exiting a minor road to a major road or emerging from a major road into a minor road. We normally refer to these roads at junctions.

A junction is a particular style of road that has normally made of minor and major roads. Emerging is a practice that incorporates a variety of MSPSL routines, the point of turns and the LADA routine.

Here are the key topics that are included in the video. Feel free to skip to whichever part you need practice on. Or alternatively, read the rest of the description if you prefer to learn in a test format.

Open Junctions: 2:22

Open Junctions are junctions that allow you to look left and right clearly without obstructions such as buildings, trees, cars and brick walls.

Open junctions are also considered safer as you can look left and right for any other road users, look out for vulnerable road users and assess the current situation.

Whilst approaching open junctions, you could also not have to stop as there could a clear opening and you can emerge without having to stop or go into first gear!

Closed Junctions: 3:36

Closed junctions are junctions that have restricted visibility. They are called "closed junctions" because there are obstructions that are near the junction. Some obstructions include tall buildings, bushes, parked cars and trees.

When emerging from closed junctions, you are required to apply the "creep and peep" technique. This will allow you to see around the obstacle and you are able to assess the road for any dangers. Whilst this may be useful to you, remember to not overhang the bonnet too far into the new road, as this could present a danger to oncoming traffic.

You should approach a closed junction at a reduced to speed and switch to first gear.

MSPSL - Signals: 4:57

Signalling correctly is vital for telling other road users where you are going. Failing to do so, could result in another road user misinterpreting your actions!

MSPSL - Position: 5:33

Road position is also another way of telling other road users of where you are going. If your indicator's fail, getting into the right position could help other road users anticipate where you are going!

MSPSL - Speed: 6:42

The use of speed is a vital component when emerging. You should slow down enough to be able to turn safely when emerging.

You should also take speed into consideration when you are approaching either an open or closed junction as you will be able to make better judgements when you reach the end of the junction.

MSPSL - Look: 7:41

Looking must be a priority at all times, especially when approaching open and closed junctions.

You must be continually looking for hazards, parked vehicles and vulnerable road users whilst emerging.

On the approach to a junction, you must always look out for developing hazards and always expect the worst. When you approach the end of the junction, you must look left and right, several times to ensure you are safe to proceed forward.

Most accidents occur due to poor observations! So keep looking at all times.

LADA: 8:36

LADA is an acronym for Look Assess Decide Act. You should always look ahead and around to see any dangers. You will then need to assess whether to emerge or wait at the end of the junction. You may also need to assess if you need to slow if you are approaching a closed junction.

You will then need to decide whether you will carry on or wait. You must then act on what you have decided.

Emerge Left: 9:20

Emerge Right: 10:10

Beyond The Basics: 11:06

The Driving Exam: 13:56
