10 MOST SHOCKING ANIMAL MUTATIONS

Mutation. You hear the word mentioned and you have to be ready to expect the unexpected. So, we’re not going to bore you with talk of how changes in DNA sequence and alterations in the genetic makeup of animals produce the visible abnormalities we see in some animals.
It’s a freak show here, and we hope you’re ready to be absolutely blown away.
Here are 10 most shocking animal mutations.

#10. Deformed Cougar
A hunter tracked and killed a young cougar which had, on the same day, attacked and injured his pet dog near the Utah border.
The hunt was legal and the whole thing would have been a non-story except that this cat was a biological mystery.
The hunter learned that the mountain lion he had harvested was a freak of nature when he went closer to examine his kill.
The young cougar had a strange deformity that left it with a set of fully-formed teeth and what appears to be a chin with small whiskers growing out of the animal’s forehead.
This was the first time anyone had ever stumbled upon such a bizarre -monstrous, even- wild cat. And so, nobody could offer a definitive explanation for the strange abnormality observed on the mountain lion’s corpse.
However, experts speculate that the bizarre deformity may have been the remnants of a conjoined twin that died in the womb and was absorbed into the surviving fetus. Variously, others believe that the abnormality resulted from a rare type of tumor known as teratoma.
Needless to say, this was one really shocking case of animal mutation.

#9. Ripped Mutant Bull
Coming across this breed of cattle from Belgium for the first time, you’d be forgiven for thinking they’ve been injected with steroids or hormones to beef them up – no pun intended.
These bulls have unusually well-developed muscles that they can’t hide behind their skin – or is it the hide! And it is these bulging muscles that make them look not only oversized, but also shockingly ripped.
Frankly, these bulky beasts look very intimidating despite the fact that their owners claim that they really are just the friendliest cattle.
Something that most people don’t know is that these stunning bulls are born with a disorder affecting the myostatin gene. They have a recessive trait called double muscling which is responsible for their increased muscle mass.
This means that the unusually ripped physique occurs naturally in the Belgian Blue bulls. So, no steroids, hormones, or other illegal supplements are used to pump up these bulls.

#8. Two-headed Dragon
Alright, it’s not a huge flying dragon, and neither does it breathe fire like the giant dragons described in ancient folklores. And, though they are referred to as dragons… well, bearded dragons, that’s the name, I’m not sure if they’re related to the real dragons. Wait, did I just say that dragons are real? …That’s another story, for another day.
Today, we’re talking about the incredibly rare two-headed bearded dragon, a species of lizard native to Australia. The two headed lizard hatched as conjoined twins, sharing a body with two heads, two hearts, and six legs.
Two-headed beardies result either from a gene mutation or when there is a tiny tear in the zygote, or fertilized egg. A complete tear of the zygote would result in twins.
The two headed dragons you see here currently live at the Venice Beach freakshow in California. They are among the few species of bearded dragons which can be kept as pets or zoos because they are easy to care for. However, due to their special condition, caring for these bearded dragons conjoined twins is a bit challenging.
Usually, two-headed lizards barely survive for long after hatching. And if they do, there is a high chance the two heads feeding in unison might choke each other while swallowing. Therefore, special care has to be taken to ensure that these beautiful creatures always live to see another day.

#7. Two-headed Shark
If you’re terrified of sharks, for the love of God, you need to look away now!
While all sharks are terrifying, this two-headed, mutant shark is a different kind of monster.
Nature sure does know how to make those of us who are terrified of the sea, even more wary of the waters.
Alright, some of you will argue that a 6-inch shark, even if two-headed, poses no significant threat to anyone. But, given the right conditions, this thing could survive and grow into a freakishly massive bad boy you don’t want to even imagine would be lurking in the beaches you love to go swimming.
