If you don't have a Raspberry Pi 2B/3B, you can install Ubuntu with Berryboot.
Otherwise here is an image I've prepared. Ubuntu 16.04 for RPi 3B+
Installed Chromium browser and geany. On-board wifi doesn't work, most wifi dongles work. Username : pi Password : raspberry https://www.dropbox.com/s/joi695auovh... Unpack, write the image to an sd-card. Best to use an sd-card of 16GB or higher. It's from a 8GB sd-card. So with some of 8gb it want work. To expand the partition use sudo raspi-config, or gparted on another sd-card.
