In this video, I will show you how to create a functional dropdown menu prototype in Figma in 2026. A static dropdown is easy, but making one that actually opens on click, highlights items on hover, and closes when you click away requires using "Interactive Components."

I will guide you through creating a component set with "Open" and "Closed" variants and setting up the prototyping interactions. We will also cover how to use "Absolute Positioning" within Auto Layout so that your dropdown menu floats on top of other content instead of pushing everything down, mimicking how real coded dropdowns behave.

Make sure to enable "Change to" interactions for the hover states to make your menu feel responsive and alive. If this video helps you create more realistic prototypes, please hit the like button and subscribe for more interaction design tutorials!
