Today, I’m going to tell you about a very common disease that poses a risk to life and, if not treated adequately, can cause significant neurological disability. This is brain stroke or cerebral stroke, commonly known as laquā.
What Is a Brain Stroke?
A brain stroke is a sudden onset of decreased blood supply or a sudden hemorrhage in the brain, which causes paralysis of one half of the body.
Advances in Treatment
With recent advances, we have significantly progressed in treating acute ischemic strokes.
As I always say, time is brain, and delayed treatment is denied treatment.
Recognizing Symptoms
If you have any symptoms such as:
Deviation of your face to one side
Weakness of one half of the body
Slurred speech
Difficulty walking
You should seek medical help immediately because these could be early signs of a stroke.
Treatment Availability
If you reach a fully equipped center for acute stroke, there is a therapy called thrombolytic therapy (clot-dissolving treatment). This therapy used to be administered within 4.5 hours of symptom onset but can now be given up to 24 hours in some cases.
At Apollo Hospitals New Delhi, we are fully equipped from emergency to ward care to provide world-class stroke treatment.
Prevention of Stroke
Stroke is both treatable and preventable.
Major modifiable risk factors that you can control are:
Diabetes
Hypertension
High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
Sedentary lifestyle
By managing these factors, you can prevent stroke in 70 to 80% of patients.
Please understand that stroke is an emergency; it is preventable and treatable.
