Hazardous Fuels Reduction in Anchorage
👋 Just a friendly reminder, project work on a fuel break near Hilltop Ski Area ⛷️ in the Municipality of Anchorage began Monday, May 5.
🚒 Drivers are urged to use caution as an increased number of emergency vehicles turning on and off Abbott Road and Hillside Drive over the next three weeks.
🚫 Closures for the Hillside Singletrack Trail System will be in place for public and firefighter safety.

🔵 PURPOSE: Wildfire Risk reduction for the Anchorage Hillside wildland-urban interface (WUI)
🔵 LOCATION: Anchorage Hillside area between Hilltop Ski Area and Prospect Heights trailhead
🔵 DATE: May 5th through May 23rd *completion date subject to change*
🔹 LENGTH: 1.25 miles long
🔹 WIDTH: 200 feet wide
🔹 AREA: 35 acres

For this project, named the East-West Connector, the Division of Forestry’s Type 2 Initial Attack Handcrew, Gannett Glacier, will hand-thin the most fire-prone fuels while strategically leaving trees and brush species that are less susceptible to wildfire. The result is a natural-looking environment that still feels like the Hillside residents know and love — but with hundreds of hours of critical mitigation work already completed in advance of a fire.
Gannett Glacier’s 20-person crew, along with other Division of Forestry resources, will be hard at work on-site for several weeks. Projects like these not only build stronger partnerships between DOF, AFD, and other cooperators — they also offer vital opportunities to train new wildland firefighters in real-world conditions.
If you see crews working along the corridor, please give them space and a wave of support — the work they’re doing is hazardous, physically demanding and critically important to protecting the City of Anchorage.”
