Hey, Jason from xFanatical here. In this short video, I’m going to demonstrate to you a Safe Doc feature that allows you to set a specific URL for a new tab page in the Chrome browser.
A new tab page is the one you click the + button in the tabs. By default, it comes with a Google search bar plus a grid of most visited shortcuts. This page is customizable via chrome extensions for a personalized taste.
While Google has supported the new tab page management in Google Admin Console, students can actually bypass and visit the original new tab page by manually typing this URL command in the address bar.
Command to bypass the new tab URL:
chrome://new-tab-page
Safe Doc can not only enforce the new tab page but also prevents students from visiting the original new tab page.
So, let's see how it works. The left is a user without Safe Doc installed, and the right window is a user with Safe Doc installed.
This is an example of the change when the policy is set to Google Classroom. New tabs created, including new windows, in Chrome automatically redirect to Google Classroom.
As you can see without Safe Doc, the user can visit the default new tab URL by entering that command in the address bar. While the right one is not able to run that command.
The feature is managed by the policy "NewTabPageUrl".
The URL value can be any size but must be beginning with HTTP or HTTPS protocols. If this value is not set or left empty, this feature is disabled and the default new tab page is used.
