When working on an assignment, it’s important to manage your references. Zotero is a free tool that can help you save and organize your references. Follow these 5 steps to add references in Zotero.
Step 1: Be sure to have the Zotero Desktop Application or web version open.
Step 2: Perform a search in whichever database you would like to use. I’m using JSTOR, but you could use any of the library’s databases including Omni and Google Scholar.
Step 3: Look through your search results. When you find a result you want to save, click the icon that appears at the end of the address bar. This icon will change, depending on the source type. For example, if the item is a book, a book icon will appear.
Step 4: For the desktop version, a box will appear with all of the search results on your current page. Select the ones you want to save. Click ‘OK.’
Step 5: Then choose the collection you want to save the reference to. In the web version, Zotero automatically saves the reference to your library and you will have to relocate the reference to the correct collection.
When you open Zotero, you should see the new references in your collection. After saving your reference, it’s important to review it to make sure the information is correct and to add in any details that may be missing.
When using Zotero, you may need to add in a reference manually, which is done by clicking the green ‘plus’ at the top of the middle column. You will need to choose the type of source you’re adding such as a book or journal article.
Once you’ve chosen the type of item, you will be able to input the proper information. This information would include things like the authors, title, and date of publication.
Remember to check out the other videos in our Zotero tutorials series.
