The Battle of the La Plata River on December 13, 1939, was the first major naval battle of World War II. The "pocket battleship" Admiral Graf Spee successfully plied the South Atlantic for two months, sinking nine merchant ships. The British dispatched an entire fleet, divided into task forces, to search for her. But it was the weakest of them, comprising two light and one heavy cruiser, that managed to find the raider. Graf Spee successfully demonstrated the advantage of heavy guns, and why it was rightly called a "pocket battleship." But war is not only battles but also diplomatic games, and Graf Spee, having won one battle, lost another.
