The lack of a suitable ATM system for integrating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) consti-tutes a major bottleneck for unlocking the future growth of UAV traffic and the myriad of promising applications that come with it.
The U-Space program provides an open framework for building up UTM systems in Europe. Similar initiatives are in place or being picked up around the globe.
Blockchain with DLT allows for a distributed machine network-system for UTM that is scala-ble, secure, immutable and ensures data privacy as well as consistency of shared data among stakeholders.
Within our Skyfall project we developed a prototype for a DLT-based UTM system with an initial focus on strategic flight planning. The technology stack is based on Hyperledger Fabric combined with CouchDB and ReactJS.
This provides a specific simplified use case to prove the applicability of DLT technology for UTM applications. Later on, the system will be extended with additional UTM-services and functionalities as U-Space evolves over the coming years.
