When you’re texting with an Arab friend and you see numbers instead of letters, you’re not seeing things. It’s an informal Arab dialect called Arabizi or Arabish used primarily online or texting as a kind of shorthand. Arabizi is a way that the Arabic alphabet has been translated into Latin characters. One example of an Arabic character that becomes a numeral in Arabizi is the Arabic character ح (Haa) which is replaced by the number 7. Another is the Arabic character ع (‘ayn), which becomes a 3 and bears a striking resemblance to the shape of the number three backward. There are several other numerals in Arabizi that stand in for Arabic characters but you’ll also find this informal Arabic dialect casually sprinkled with English words such as “hi,” “thanks,” and “yes” and “no.” Because Arabizi isn’t standardized, you’ll find it’s constantly evolving and changing to keep up with technology, slang, and trendy terms.
