Duke of Earl is an iconic doo wop landmark first released in 1961 that introduced Gene Chandler as a distinctive voice in early 60s r&b. Built around a hypnotic deep-voice spoken intro, layered harmonies and a stately rhythmic march, the Duke of Earl blended street corner doo wop with a smoother soul sound and high production values. It effectively launched Chandler as a solo star, becoming one of the most recognizable hits of its era.
