You should clean your camera sensor under the following circumstances:
1. *Visible Dust Spots in Photos:* If you notice dark spots or specks appearing in your images, especially at smaller apertures (higher f-numbers like f/11 or f/16), it's a clear sign that your sensor may have dust on it and needs cleaning.
2. *Regular Maintenance:* Even if you're not noticing spots, it's a good practice to clean your sensor once every 1-2 years if you use your camera infrequently. If you change lenses often or shoot in dusty environments, you might need to clean it more frequently, such as every 6 months to a year.
3. *Before Important Shoots:* It's wise to check and clean your sensor before any significant photo shoots, such as weddings, events, or trips, to ensure you're getting the best possible image quality.
4. *After Exposure to Harsh Environments:* If you've been shooting in environments where dust, sand, or moisture are prevalent (e.g., deserts, beaches, windy outdoor locations), inspect and clean your sensor as soon as possible after the shoot.
5. *When Switching Lenses Frequently:* If you change lenses often, particularly in outdoor environments, your sensor is more exposed to dust and debris. Regular checks and cleanings are advisable.
Regularly inspect your sensor by taking a test shot of a clear, bright surface (like the sky or a white wall) at a small aperture to check for dust spots. If you see them, it's time for a cleaning.
