Making Dracula's overprotective love for Mavis feel genuinely emotional rather than comedic, grounding the monster world in something that feels real and lived-in, and making the human heart of the story land with the weight it deserves — none of that came easy. But these characters deserved to be brought to life with real craft and care, so I kept going until it was right.
🧛 THE STORY
Count Dracula built Hotel Transylvania for one reason. His daughter.
After losing his wife to the human world, Dracula raises Mavis inside the walls of the most extraordinary place ever constructed — a sanctuary hidden from humanity, a home for every monster that ever needed one. No humans. No exceptions. No exceptions ever.
Mavis has grown up inside those walls. She has never seen a sunrise from outside them. She has never walked among humans. She has never been allowed to. Her father calls it protection. She is starting to call it something else.
Then Jonathan stumbles through the gates. A human. Backpack on his shoulders, completely lost, completely terrified, and somehow completely impossible to turn away. Dracula sees the disaster immediately. Every instinct he has screams to remove this human before Mavis ever sees him.
He is already too late.
What follows is the thing Dracula has spent a century trying to prevent — his daughter looking at the world outside these walls and finding it beautiful. And the human looking at the world inside them and finding it home. The zing is not something either of them chose. It is not something Dracula can argue with or frighten away or hide behind a door.
A father who built an entire fortress to keep his daughter safe discovers that the one thing he never protected her from was the possibility of a life he did not design for her.
